Internet Group Seeks Standards For Local Content Dev
The President of the Nigeria Internet Group (NIG), Mr Bayo Banjo, has called on the Federal Government to ensure standards in local content development.
Banjo made the call at the NIG Annual E-Business Conference in Lagos.
Our correspondent reports that the conference had the theme: ‘`E-Business: Broadband Technology – An Important Tool for Accelerated Growth and Development’’.
Banjo said that standards in local contents would ensure patronage of indigenous products.
According to the group’s President, bringing into Nigeria a software developed outside the country is not local content development even when the software is developed by a Nigerian.
He regretted that this had been the situation.
Banjo urged the government to encourage local content developers by providing the enabling environment for them to thrive.
He called for a policy that would recognise merit and encourage local content developers.
The Acting Chief Operating Officer of the Nigeria Internet Registration Association, Mr Akinbo Adebunmi, said, “Local content is the development of a product or service within a country and for use in that country.’’
Adebunmi said that local content development should be encouraged by increased patronage of local products.
He urged the relevant authorities to ensure development of local contents that would be of international standards.
A Managing Editor of Africa Telecom, an information technology magazine, Mr Olubayo Abiodun, urged Nigerians to stop thinking that the country’s local contents were substandard.
He said that Nigerians should patronise local producers and service providers in the interest of the country’s economic growth.
