FG Okays Chemical Fertiliser For Use
The Federal Government
has refuted a report urging Nigerians to be cautious over the use of chemical fertiliser.
This refutal is contained in a statement signed by the Special Assistant (Media) to the Supervising Minister of Science and Technology, Mrs Efem Nkanga, and made available to newsmen in Abuja.
According to the statement, the information is “a misinformed view totally incorrect and scientifically baseless”.
The statement said that the Deputy Director, Department of Physical and Life Science, Mr Abayomi Oguntunde, who represented the minister at a three-day National Conference on Environmental Health Sciences, was misquoted in the report.
Oguntunde was reported to have said that the use of chemical fertiliser posed serious health risks that could lead to death, allergy, sickness and disability.
The statement also stated that Genetically Modified crops ensured better and safer agricultural practices, because they eliminated the use of chemical fertiliser which endangered the environment by killing off beneficial organisms in the soil.
The statement said that the views expressed in the report did not represent the position of the Supervising Minister of the Ministry of Science and Technology, Mrs Omobola Johnson.
It also stated that the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the Federal Government of Nigeria were not in agreement with it.
“All over the world, about 50 per cent of total growth in food production comes from the use of fertiliser,” it noted.
According to the statement, the Ministry of Science and Technology strongly supports the efforts of the Federal Government and advises the public not to be misinformed or alarmed by the erroneous statements.
The statement enjoined Nigerians to disregard the caution on chemical fertilisers.
The statement reiterated that fertilisers both organic and inorganic had been scientifically proven to improve soil fertility management and ensured more productive, nutritious, safe and environmentally sustainable food production.
It further said that the use of fertiliser was safe and does not constitute any danger to human health or consumer safety.
Our correspondent reports that the Federal Government, through the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, supports farmers in the efficient and safe use of organic and inorganic fertilisers.
This is to boost food production, improve food security, enhance human nutrition, and reverse soil nutrient depletion as well as soil degradation.

BVN Enrolments Rise 6% To 67.8m In 2025 — NIBSS
The Nigeria Inter-Bank Settlement System (NIBSS) has said that Bank Verification Number (BVN) enrolments rose by 6.8 per cent year-on-year to 67.8 million as at December 2025, up from 63.5 million recorded in the corresponding period of 2024.
In a statement published on its website, NIBSS attributed the growth to stronger policy enforcement by the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and the expansion of diaspora enrolment initiatives.
NIBSS noted that the expansion reinforces the BVN system’s central role in Nigeria’s financial inclusion drive and digital identity framework.
Another major driver, the statement said, was the rollout of the Non-Resident Bank Verification Number (NRBVN) initiative, which allows Nigerians in the diaspora to obtain a BVN remotely without physical presence in the country.
A five-year analysis by NIBSS showed consistent growth in BVN enrolments, rising from 51.9 million in 2021 to 56.0 million in 2022, 60.1 million in 2023, 63.5 million in 2024 and 67.8 million by December 2025. The steady increase reflects stronger compliance with biometric identity requirements and improved coverage of the national banking identity system.
However, NIBSS noted that BVN enrolments still lag the total number of active bank accounts, which exceeded 320 million as of March 2025.
The gap, it explained, is largely due to multiple bank accounts linked to single BVNs, as well as customers yet to complete enrolment, despite the progress recorded.
