Don’t Ban Satchet Water Production
Following the recent announcement by the federal government to stop the production of satchet water in the country early in 2014, the Executive Director, Jerospalm Processing Industries Nig. Ltd, Ahoada, Mr Ezeilo Livin has described the move as “unfair” for that sector.
The Minister of Environment, Mrs Hadiza Mailafia who gave the indication in Abuja recently said that the government planned to take the action based on the environmental challenges the used satchet was posing.
Mr Livin who said his company produces Delight Satchet Water and Yorghout among other products while speaking to our correspondent in his office over the weekend, said the intention of government was “not mature” because there were some things that the government was supposed to put on ground which they have not done.
He said satchet water was not the only product constituting environmental hazard in the society.
The JerosPalm boss advised the government to rather go into partnership with private producers with a view to establishing waste management and recycling plants across the country.
He explained that the unemployment rate in the country was not healthy for such action even as he described the idea as “very quick”.
He urged the government to rather look at the consequences such action would generate considering the already bloated labour market.
“For instance, Jerospalm Industries has a staff strength of over 200.
Push back that into the labour market assuming the government decides to shut down production what do you think will happen” he questioned.
He said such move would still over bloat the already over-bloated labour market in the country.
He opined that government could not employ everybody and that one of the major challenges in the society was that government had not done much in that direction.
While hailing the efforts of the Rivers State government in the establishment of waste management and recycling plants through its Waste-to-Wealth programmes, Mr Livin called on the government to employ the process of public private partnership Initiative (PPP).
He said that the policy if implemented would create the impression that the government has a grievance with satchet water producers.
“If you are clamping down on people that produce things that impact negatively on the environment then it should not be only satchet water producers” he said.
“There are other people too and I do not want to mention names so that it does not look as if I am dragging them out”, he said.
