Imo Begins Work On Marine University
Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State says the first phase of Marine University project, embarked upon by the state government, has commenced.
Okorocha said in Owerri, Monday after inspecting the site of the university at Ose-Moto, Oguta Local Government Area of the state that the first phase of the project estimated at N2.5 billion, included landscaping, construction of the perimeter fencing, administrative department, blocks of classrooms and hostels.
The governor said that the project was being funded by the Imo State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (ISOPADEC), adding that the institution would admit its first set of students in 2015.
Okorocha said that the state government was executing the project in collaboration with Korean Marine University, noting that ISOPADEC Board of Directors had visited the institution to understudy its programmes.
He commended the people of Ose-Moto for donating their land for the project.The project is being sited close to the Federal Government-funded seaport and naval base project sites.
The Managing Director of ISOPADEC, Dr Henry Okafor, gave the assurance that the commission had the financial capacity to complete the first phase of the project on schedule.
Okafor said that the people of Ose-Moto were eager to see the success of the project as well as those of the seaport and naval base projects because they donated their land for the project.
He said that when completed, the project would benefit the oil producing areas of Ohaji/Egbema and the local government area immensely, and added that the project would provide employment and university education opportunities for the youths of the area.
