Council Targets N150m Revenue

Published

Calabar South Local Government Areas of Cross River State, says it has set an annual target of N150 million as internally generated revenue with effect from 2013.

The council’s Chairman, Mr Ekeng Henshaw, said this in an interview with newsmen in Calabar.

He said that as part of efforts to achieve the goal, the council had installed an automated revenue collection network in its secretariat.

Henshaw said that a contract on the revenue collection system would be signed between the council and a consultant before the end of March.

“We are going to generate between N100 million and N150 million from the streets of Calabar South, every year.

“We are targeting between N20 million and N30 million every month as internal revenue, using the automated collection system, and we are projecting that modest sum because our revenue is seasonal,” he said.

Henshaw said that the council’s projection was based on the fact that Calabar South was the commercial hub of Cross River, noting that levies on business premises, tenement rates and permits constituted part of revenue sources for the council.

“At White House Street, for instance, every compound has five or six shops; if each of the shops pays a minimum of N2,000 as development rate, you can imagine the amount that will bring to the council.

“As you know, there are many streets like that in the local government area and that means that if we work hard on our programme, we will meet our revenue target,” he added.

Henshaw underscored the determination of the executive officials of the council to leave a good legacy at the end of their tenure, adding that the council would carry out sustained public enlightenment activities on its new revenue policy.

He, however, gave the assurance that there would be no instances of double taxation for any organisation in the council area.

He pledged that the council would use a percentage of the revenue to fund intervention programmes in education and health sectors.

A statement signed and issued by the Director, Corporate Affairs of the NDDC, Seledi Thompson-Wakama, stated that the intervention, aimed at cushioning the impact of seasonal flooding, comes amid growing concerns over the loss of lives, farmlands and economic assets in the riverine community.
Representing the Managing Director of NDDC, Dr. Samuel Ogbuku, at the event, the Director of Education, Health and Social Services, Dr. Patience Ezugu, said the initiative reflects the commission’s commitment to alleviating hardship and improving living conditions across the Niger Delta.
She noted that the donation of food items and essential household materials forms part of NDDC’s broader strategy to support vulnerable communities while advancing sustainable development in the region.
“As we distribute these materials to the people of Ayakoro, we reaffirm our resolve to empower communities and drive meaningful development across the Niger Delta”, she said.
Ogbuku, in a statement, reiterated that the commission’s mandate is rooted in addressing environmental degradation, pollution and other development challenges confronting the region.
He assured that NDDC would sustain interventions that deliver tangible benefits to affected communities.
In his remarks, the Acting Paramount Ruler of Ayakoro Kingdom, King Micah Itekesi, represented by a community leader, Pastor ThankGod Expenses, commended the commission for its timely response to the plight of flood victims.
Describing the intervention as unprecedented, he expressed gratitude to the NDDC leadership for the scale of assistance provided, noting that the support would go a long way in easing the suffering of residents.
He also assured that the relief materials would be distributed fairly among households in the community.
Speaking on the selection process, the programme consultant, Dr. Daniel George Smile, explained that Ayakoro was prioritised due to the severity of flood impact and the community’s fragile economic condition.
