LG Trains 130 Women, Youths In Skills Acquisition
The Chairman, Okobo Local Government Area, Akwa Ibom State, Mrs Felicia Bassey, has said that the council sponsored 130 women and youths in the area for skills training.
Bassey said in an interview that the council was collaborating with the National Directorate of Employment (NDE) in the state in the programme.
She said that the trainees were undergoing skills acquisition in photography and video production, plumbing, panel beating, electrical installation and soap making.
She said that the women involved in soap making had already developed a brand which they christened “Utibe Soap” and would soon be exhibited to the public.
Bassey explained that the essence of the training was to provide a source of livelihood to the beneficiaries as well as make them self-reliant.
Aside from the training, she said that the council also provided monthly transport allowance of N5,000 to the trainees as further incentive to them.
She said that the programme, which began on December 1, 2012, would last for six months, adding that at the end of the training, the council would provide the beneficiaries with starter packs.
She also said that the programme would be continuous, adding that those who were not accommodated in the first batch would be considered in subsequent batches.
“We are not going to stop with this first batch. We hope to make it a continuous exercise to reduce youths’ unemployment.
“As our economy improves, we will continue to train and retrain people as our contribution to reducing unemployment and checking insecurity in our communities,” Bassey said.
