RVHA Holds Special Session
As a build up to the Red Carpet event scheduled for Saturday by the Rivers State House of Assembly to honour some outstanding lawmakers present and past, a special legislative session holds today at the chamber of the Assembly.
Speaker of the House, Rt Hon Otelemaba Amachree, who disclosed this at yesterday’s sitting, said the special session marks the commencement of the five day event that will culminate in honouring of those that have distinguished themselves.
Hon Amachree said the special session would have in attendance all former lawmakers in the state, including the governor of the state who was speaker for eight years and the first Speaker, Rt Hon R.R Briggs, among others.
The Speaker explained that some would become Ambassadors of the Assembly, and urged the lawmakers to participate actively in the ceremony which would feature football match with the state executive council and will be rounded off on Sunday, October 21, 2012, with a thanksgiving service.
It would be recalled that the lawmakers had earlier held a luncheon to raise funds for the event which attracted stakeholders.
In another development, the Assembly has moved the bill seeking for a law that would harmonise taxes and levies in the state to the Committee on Finance for necessary legislative input.
Also sent to the House Committee on Education is a bill for a law to repeal some sections of the education law and bring it in line with the Education Quality Assurance Agency Law recently passed by the House.
In spite of some opposition to the two bills, the Speaker allowed them to move smoothly to the committee stage where all the issues raised by the members could be addressed.
