Elechi Amadi Tasks FG On Bakassi
The Federal Government has been urged to appeal the
judgement of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) that ceded the Bakassi
peninsula to the Cameroons sometime ago.
The Chairman of Rivers State scholarship Board, Captain
Elechi Amadi (rtd), made the appeal Tuesday in a chat with newsmen at Aluu in
Ikwerre Local government area of Rivers State.
Amadi said the appeal became imperative after a careful
thought on the sufferings of Nigerians in that area.
He regretted that the Federal Government is already
considering to accept the world court judgement on Bakassi in spite of the
emerging historical facts about the issue.
The playwright and novelist, used the resolutions passed in
the Senate and National Assembly to advance a reason for the federal Government
to appeal the ICJ’s judgement.
He accused the Federal Government of abandoning Nigerians at
Bakassi with much ado, adding that the people make up a local Government
Council entrenched in the constitution.
According to him, the federal government should not ignore
the resolutions of the national Assembly and insisted that the Bakassi people
are not second-class citizens, but are fully covered by the UN charter on
Fundamental Human Right.
The elder statesman narrated how advanced nations fight
bitterly over the rights of even a single citizen, suggesting that President
Jonathan must fight in a similar spirit and recue fellow Nigerians in Cameroon.
On financial and material assistance to the people, he said,
“it is no issue, they should be given adequate attention that will bring them
back to their ancestral home.
He noted that the President should consider the meaning of
his middle name ‘Ebele’ (kindness) and show compassion to them, hinting that an
11th hour appeal can save the situation.
He appealed to newsmen to put in their best on the Bakassi
issue so that it can be addressed once and for all.
