LASG Sets Up Committee On Rice Transformation
The Lagos State Government last Thursday inaugurated a joint public-private sector committee on rice transformation, following the ongoing drive to achieve a sustainable level of rice production in the state.
The Commissioner for Agriculture and Cooperatives, Mr Gbolahan Lawal, told the five-man committee in Ikeja that it should explore how Lagos State could benefit from the agricultural transformation agenda of the Federal Government on rice.
“The committee will liaise with the Ogun-Osun River Basin Development Authority to ascertain the actual area of land available to Lagos State and verify suitable land for rice cultivation in Ise-Obada area of Lekki and other locations in the state,’’ Lawal said.
The commissioner added that the committee was also expected to make specific recommendations to the ministry on how research and development could be used to improve rice yield in the state.
“With about two tonnes per hectare, Lagos State should find a means to enable it to catch up with Kano and Jigawa that are able to produce four to five tonnes per hectare,” he said.
The commissioner also charged the committee members to study the Federal Government’s incentive programmes such as the Nigeria Incentive-Based Risk Sharing System for Agricultural Lending (NIRSAL) and to articulate how the state could benefit from these schemes in the promotion of rice cultivation.
Lawal also charged the committee to make recommendations to the ministry on how rice farming could generate employment for the teeming youths and also support the state’s economic development.
Responding on behalf of the committee members, its chairman, Mr Emmanuel Ejiwere, said Lagos had a population of more than 20 million people, but controlled about 45 to 50 per cent of the purchasing power of the national economy.
He, however, noted that the state was the most vulnerable in terms of food security because of its geographical zone.
Ejiwere pledged that the committee members would carry out the assignment to the best of their ability.
