Rep Tasks LG Boss On Good Governance
Member representing Degema/Bonny federal constituency in the House of Representatives, Dr. Sokonte Davies, has expressed delight over the swearing-in of newly elected chairman of Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, Hon. Daddy Pokima by Governor Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi last Friday, saying, the expectations are high for the council chairman to perform in office.
Davies who stated this in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt noted that the local government was in dire need of development as it is still lacking in basic infrastructure.
He advised the council chairman to avoid sycophants but to listen to the words of elders because as he put it, the words of elders are words of wisdom.
Davies listed provision of transportation facilities, healthcare services, boreholes and improvement of local government roads as some of the areas the council chairman could give priority attention to make a difference in the lives of the people.
He also noted that school enrolment in the local government was nothing to write home about, and urged the chairman to liaise with the relevant authorities including teachers to shore up the enrolment, stressing that security was another major challenge facing the council area.
While urging the council boss to fashion out measures to check the LG’s crumbling economy, he suggested that youth centres be established to engage them in recreational activities and put them away from crimes.
To promote good governance, Davies stressed the need for the chairman to avoid making hasty promises and unguarded statements, as well as taking time to choose those to work with him like the council secretary, Chief of Staff, advisers and supervisors among others because, according to him, “he needs to choose people of integrity who would help him deliver good governance to the people”.
For the council chairman to succeed in office, the lawmaker also hinted that he should execute projects that have direct bearing in the lives of the people instead of embarking on elephant projects.
He urged the chairman to address the revenue profile of the local government before embarking on capital projects and also consider the expenditure profile in order to plug all leakages and check wastages to enable him “ have more resources to deliver the political and social expectations of the people.”
