Commissioner Wants More Private Participation In Maritime Sector
The Nigeria D-8 Commissioner, Amb. Martin Uhomoibhi, has stressed the need for private sectors in member countries to develop partnership framework in the maritime sector. Uhomoibhi, who made the call on Monday in Abuja on the occasion of the second D-8 Expert Working Group (EWG) meeting on shipping, said the partnership would enhance trade in member countries.
They are Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan and Turkey. “It is obvious that one of the gaps in the implementation of decisions of the first Expert Working Group is the lack of participation by the D-8 private sector. “I, therefore, urge the private sector participants to brace to the challenge, to network and develop partnership frameworks,” Uhomoibhi said.
He added that the active participation of the D-8 private sector would challenge government authorities to “translate such frameworks into Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) and bilateral agreements’’. Uhomoibhi noted that the interest expressed by Nigeria for partnership in the areas of maritime joint venture, train the trainers and research programme, and the establishment of automated maritime data access had not been keyed into by any D-8 country.
He said that because of this Nigeria had faced difficulties in tabling maritime issues at the joint commission processes between it and a number of D-8 countries.’’ Uhomoibhi, who is also the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, was represented by Amb. Akin Fayomi, the Under-Secretary for the Regions and International Organisations in the Ministry. The meeting, which theme is “Facilitating Private Sector Networking for Sustainable Maritime Sector Development in the D-8 Group”, has in attendance stakeholders from the maritime sector of member countries.
Our correspondent reports that a communique is expected to be issued at the end of the two-day meeting, which is being held behind closed doors.
The meeting is being hosted by the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA).
