Opobo/Nkoro Set To Unveil New Development Blueprint
The Chairman of Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area, Hon. Maclean Uranta, has disclosed plans to unveil a new development plan for the area.
The new blueprint he said is the outcome of a stakeholders meeting held in July and will provide a road map for his administration in the next three years of his second tenure.
Hon. Uranta in an exclusive chat with The Tide in Port Harcourt hinted that the plan will be formally unveiled during his 100 days in office celebrations noting that the council has already began implementing some of the recommendations set out in the plan.
He stated that in order to check haphazard development, the council will marry both short and long term goals to drive the economy of the area which he stressed is still poor due to the near absence of revenue sources.
Some of the short term goals he stated targeted as part of his 100 days milestone include the completion and commissioning of the Opobo Cottage Hospital Mortuary, the Mini-Ngala Bridge at Queens Town, commencement of the new Opobo cemetery and Opubo Hotel among others.
The ONOLGA council boss stressed that his administration would ensure that the hotel and cemetery were begun because of the huge revenue and employment potentials, the hotel would create employment and will also create revenue. The Mortuary and the cemetery will also create revenue.
“I want to focus on these areas that will naturally provide money without putting pressure on the local populace”.
Prior to this time, Hon. Uranta averred that the council had zero internal revenue base but his government has been able to raise it to about a million monthly by exploiting the transport sector.
He explained that if the abundant tourism potentials of the area is fully tapped, it will improve on the lean purse of the council.
In the long term, the council boss said his administration is geared at checking poverty and transforming the lives of the rural folks, “looking at our terrain, the only thing I have seen there is only on water transport. We can collect levies from transport operators, but the truth is that there are few of them there and the council is considering how much they are making from it so as not to push them into more suffering”.
He explained that the council is still considering whether to impose tax on the rural populace or seek alternative revenue source, but that tourism remains the only money making venture in the area if fully exploited.
