Bayelsa Gets First Female Head Of Service
15 years old Bayelsa State has got a female as Head of Service for the state’s civil service.She is Mrs.Gloria Izonfo.
Mrs Izonfo has already been sworn-in by the State Governor, Chief Timipre Sylva, who charged her to initiate reforms that would instill discipline in the service.
Six new permanent secretaries were also sworn-in along with her. They are the Solicitor-General, Mrs.Biobelemoye Onye,Dr.Boumokumo Kpokiri, Dr. Martha Akpana, Mr. Durban Whyte, Mr.Okpoi Ebimotimi and Dr.Henry Simeni.
Mrs.Gloria Izonfo, takes over from the retired Head of Service,Mr.Obeha Oworibo.
Until her appointment, she was the Permanent Secretary in charge of General Services in the office of the Secretary to the State Government. In a charge to the new Head of Service,Governor Timipre Sylva,said the civil service in the state was yet to live up to expectation and asked the new appointees to make it functional to help drive the vision of the government.
The Governor, noted that civil servants in the state do not report early to duty urged her to ensure that the service rendered must be commensurate to the salaries paid by government.
“Head of Service,you are going to be on top of a civil service that I consider today not very functional.People don’t perform the job they are employed and paid to do.You must ensure that you make this civil service work and instil discipline”, Sylva lamented.
Governor Sylva stated that the civil service remained the engine room of any government that would want to succeed and called on all the senior civil servants to use their positions to improve the standards.
The Governor, who congratulated the new Head of Service for being the first woman to occupy the position,urged her to come up with new reforms to improve the capacity of the system.
Later in an interview, Mrs.Gloria Izonfo,said she would work in line with the directive of the Governor to build the capacity of the workers to enhance productivity.
Mrs.Gloria Izonfo,who has put in thirty-two years of service, is the fifth Head of Service to be appointed since the creation of Bayelsa state in 1996.

The Lead Pastor at Jesus Appointed People’s Bible Church, Ozogbe, Ikwerrengwo-Etche, in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State, Pastor Promise Nwaelele, has urged Christians to make God the anchor of their lives in whatever position they find themselves, in order to attain the destinies set for them by God.
Pastor Nwaelele, who gave the charge recently in a sermon he preached at the 70th birthday anniversary thanksgiving service of Sir Donald Michael Jaja, a veteran journalist in Rivers State, said this is because any genuine child of God is a permanent target for destabilization and destruction by the devil.
Taking his text from the Bible book of Mark 4:16-17, the preacher stated that fulfilment in life for a child of God required faith, obedience to God’s word, humility and grace to withstand trials and temptations.
According to him, temptations and afflictions are bound to happen in the lives of those who have accepted Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior.
“No wonder the Bible said that those that endure till the end shall be saved”, he said.
The Clergyman said God prospers believers who are humble, not proud and conceited, and leads them to destiny fulfilment.
“David said in Psalm 51:17, that the sacrifices acceptable to God are a broken spirit, not an impatient or proud spirit”, the preacher said.
He called on Christians not to allow persecutions and afflictions to sway them from the love and blessings of Jesus Christ.
On his part, Jaja, a seasoned Journalist who retired as an Acting Editor of the Rivers State Government-owned The Tide Newspaper, gave thanks to God for honouring him by giving him the grace of attaining 70 years.
“I cannot capture what the good Lord has done for me in my entire life in this fleeting moment of thanksgiving. But, I know that without Him, I wouldn’t have been who I am today, in all spheres. Therefore, my joy knows no bounds as I give thanks to my creator today, alongside my family. Praise be His holy name”, Jaja said.
