Bomb Blasts Worry Minister
Prince Adetokunbo Kayode, the Minister of Defence, says the spate of bombings in the country has opened a new vista of challenge for security operatives.
Kayode made the remark on Saturday in Abuja shortly after visiting some victims of the New Year Eve bomb blast in Abuja at the Asokoro District General Hospital.
He, however, gave an assurance that government was on top of the situation and urged Nigerians not to be overwhelmed by the incidents.
Kayode urged the people to be vigilant and report any suspicious persons to the nearest security agency for necessary action.
“Yes, everyone is apprehensive, but in actual sense everybody needs to be vigilant, that is the truth.
“Immediately after what happened in Jos and Maiduguri, we have recalibrated our modus operandi for internal security,’’ the minister said.
He said that the perpetrators of the bombings were deliberately trying to create the impression that there was no security in Nigeria and also create problems among Nigerians.
“We will do everything within our powers to make sure that we nip this in the bud; those involved in Friday’s incident will be tracked down and made to face the wrath of the law.
“Even if we don’t have the competence, we will get the necessary support from anywhere in the world to get those involved. That is the standard practice all over the world,’’ he said.
Kayode confirmed that four persons, including three men and a pregnant woman, died in the blast, while 26 others who sustained various degrees of injuries “are being treated on the bills of government’’.
On the number of arrests made so far, he said “we will not be able to discuss that yet but be rest assured that we have condoned off the area and deployed forensic experts.’’
At the Mogadishu Barracks, report that stern looking Military Police have taken over the main entrance, frisking those going in and out.
Our correspondent also observed that those who have no business to transact in the barracks were turned back, while some shop owners in the “Mammy Market”, venue of the blast, who came around, were denied entry.
It will be recalled that a bomb exploded at the barrack at about 7 p.m. on Friday, at the peak period when revelers throng the market to relish in roasted fish and drinks.
