Safety Guidelines: FRSC Sets Deadline For Haulage Firms
The Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) has given a deadline to haulage companies to comply with safety guidelines to reduce carnage on Nigeria highways.
The Transport Liaison Officer (TLO), Dr Kayode Olagunju, told newsmen yesterday in Lagos, that after July 31, officers will apply the full weight of the law on offenders.
“The FRSC is not comfortable with these crashes and has decided to collaborate with the key government agencies to find a lasting solution to stop these killings on our highways,” Olagunju said.
He said that requirements which by August 1 would be enforced, included use of terminals made available to them, latching of containers while on transit and appointment of safety managers.
The officer said that the FRSC had held series of meetings with stakeholders in the haulage and maritime sectors on how to stem the incessant crashes of articulated vehicles.
According to him, the FRSC Act of 2007 makes it mandatory for fleet operators that have more than five vehicles to have a safety unit under the Road Transport Safety Scheme (RTSS).
Olagunju said that the Act further stipulated that such units should be headed by a safety manager or officer, stressing that the FRSC was ready to help train the companies personnel in that regard.
He decried the indiscriminate parking of trucks on the highway, particularly along the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, which hindered the free flow of traffic on the highway.
The TLO said that the FRSC was having talks with the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) on modalities for the construction of parks in some locations for articulated vehicles.
Mr Muritala Akinola, the Chief Operations Officer, Inland Transport Service, Nigeria Shippers Council confirmed to The Tide source that his establishment was collaborating with the FRSC.
Akinola said that the safety challenges that characterized transportation of cargoes from the ports to the hinterland would soon be resolved with implementation of the RTSS.
“We have signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the FRSC to ensure safety and abide by the RTSS,” he said.
Akinola said that seminars and workshops would be organised for the chief executives of these haulage companies as well as their drivers on the need for safety on the road.
