Super Eagles Miss N225m … Following Loss To Argentina
Nigeria’s Super Eagles’ 0-1 loss to Argentina yesterday at the on-going World Cup in South Africa means that the team has lost the opportunity to have an additional bonus of $1.7 million, and equivalent of N255 million.
The money was promised the team and their officials on Friday, prior to the encounter by Nigeria’s president, Dr Goodluck Jonathan, at their Protea Hotel in Johannesburg.
The money is made up of a donation of $1 million from Globacom chairman, Mr Mike Adenuga and that from the Federal Government delegation to the World Cup.
Saying the amount was even not enough, the President had said, “If you win the opening match, I will go back home in flying colours to mobilise the private sector to donate to this cause.”
He asked the Super Eagles to see themselves as representatives of Africa and do the continent proud in the tournament.
Jonathan who had arrived in Johannesburg in the early hours of Friday for the FIFA World Cup, told the team that “the weight of Africa is on you. You must see yourselves as carrying the light of not only Nigeria but the African continent at large.”
Expressing the hope of African leaders that an African team must win the world Cup on the African soil, the president urged the players to excel.
The president said he terminated other pressing engagements to be in South Africa and urged the Super Eagles to do their best to bring the cup home.
Earlier, the Senate President and leader of the Federal Government delegation to the event, Senator David Mark, announced the $700,000 donation.
Also speaking, the Sports Minister, Ibrahim Bio expressed gratitude to the president and his team for the gesture, noting that it would propel the team to do their best.
“Two weeks ago, the present sent forth the eagles on this assignment and today he is here again.
“We thank you for your attention, resources and moral support,” he said.
The Coach, Lars Lagerback who responded on behalf of the team, said the players had been working very hard so as not to disappoint Nigerians.
