Police Abort Posting Of 13,000 Teachers
The posting of 13,000 teach
ers recently employed by the Rivers State Government, billed to take place at the Liberation Stadium, Port Harcourt, last Wednesday was aborted follow the refusal of the police to allow people from entering the stadium.
The Tide gathered that the newly employed teachers had arrived the venue of the exercise in the early hours of the day but the police stormed the venue barring the crowd from entering the venue.
The police invasion of the venue left the unprecedented crowd scampering for safety as young men and women including pregnant women were seen stumbling on themselves with some injuries in the process.
The situation also resulted in a traffic ham along the Stadium Road Elekahia/Rumukalagbor link road.
Some of the teachers who spoke with our correspondent said they were yet to receive any briefing by the authorities of the Rivers State Government before the police swooped on the crowd.
One of the newsly employed teachers, who identified himself as George Atako, said; “those of us who were inquisitive to know the reasons behind the police actions, were told that the gathering was politically motivated to discredit President Jonathan.”
Another teacher, Mr Patrick Okuno, said “it was regrettable that Rivers State has been turned into a political battle field”, and decried the embarrassment caused the newly employed teachers by the police.
A police source, however, disclosed to The Tide that the police intervention was out of security consideration, basically to avert a stampede akin to the fatal incident of the Peoples Democratic Party, (PDP) Presidential rally in 2011, at the same venue.
Meanwhile, youth-yiuh based organisation, the patriotic youth Alerts Network has condemned the police invasion at the liberation Stadium, describing it as “uncalled for”.
President of the Association, Comrade Emmanuel Orgwu, who spoke with our correspondent, said Rivers State was not under a state of emergency to warrant such actions of the police against a gathering of common interest, that is for the benefit of the youth.
Comrade Orgwu who described the police action as provocative, called on President Goodluck Jonathan and the National Assembly to “immediately intervene to save Rivers State from siege by the police.
