Abuja Bomb Blast, Hoax –Police
The police said the blast which rocked a very busy and popular area of Karu, one of the satellite towns of the Federal Capital Territory, was caused by an industrial gas cylinder and not from bomb as being speculated.
The blast, which occurred early last Monday evening in an area near an outlet of popular fast food chain, Mr. Biggs’ threw the entire vicinity into panic with many running away to save their lives.
Our correspondent gathered that some customers on queue to withdraw money from an ATM machine in a bank located in the very busy commercial area as well as revelers at numerous open air gardens around the area abandoned their mission and ran away. In the atmosphere of confusion which followed the blast which was heard several metres away, panicky motorists furiously drove out of the vicinity while panicky passersby took to their heels.
The explosion which led to thick smoke shattered windows of buildings and shops in Karu Shopping Complex, Mr. Biggs’ as well as those of the other buildings nearby.
However, police took control of the situation at the scene later with the Divisional Police Officer, Karu Police Station, Mr. Dauda Buba, leading the team of policemen and later, the police anti-bomb squad coming to sweep the area.
Addressing a news conference in Abuja, yesterday, the Commissioner of Police in charge of the FCT, Femi Ogunbayode who confirmed that no life was lost, said the command has commenced investigations into how the explosives were stored at the site.
Mr Ogunbayode, however, assured residents of the city of their continued safety, saying the police are more than ready to discharge their primary duty of protecting lives and property.
The Police Public Relations Officer, FCT Command, Althine Daniel, also told journalists that the explosion was from a gas cylinder, adding that nobody sustained injury or died from the explosion.
