RSUST Matriculates 3,817 …Bans Illegal Levies
A total of 3,817 new intakes of the Rivers State University of Science and Technology (RSUST), Nkpolu-Oroworukwo, Port Harcourt, were matriculated last Wednesday as authorities of the institution officially banned all forms of illegal levies.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof Barineme Fakae, who disclosed this in his address, at the 31st Matriculation ceremony of the University, said 132 of the new intakes were of Faculty of Agriculture, 1,121 were of Faculty of Engineering while Environmental Sciences Faculty had a total figure of 240.
Further breakdown showed that Faculty of Law had 195, Management Sciences Faculty,853, Faculty of Science, 674 while Faculty of Technical and Science Education had 602.
Prof Fakae, who also announced a total ban of forceful and exorbitant sale of unapproved textbooks, all kinds of unauthorised levies, extortions, including buying and selling of handouts, said the step was in line with approved strategies by the Senate to encourage students to concentrate on their studies without undue financial burden, and urged the new intakes to imbibe the spirit of hard work instead of investing their precious time on unproductive ventures.
“As students, who aspire to succeed in your chosen disciplines, you must be guided by the fact that the only way to attain real success in life is through hardwork,” the VC stressed.
Prof Fakae emphatically stressed the need for the students to shun membership of all forms of anti-social activities as the gates of the university were at all times shut against those who derive pleasure in engaging in despicable activities such as cultism, examination malpractice, and advised them to cross check with Students Affairs Department for lists of approved clubs before joining any.
Prof Fakae further stated that Senate of RSUST had enacted a new policy for the practice of students unionism, which spells out a minimum of Second Class Upper Division with cumulative aggregate of 3.5, adding that students leadership positions must not be held in the students’ final year to avoid distraction.
The VC, who commended the Rivers State Government for providing the enablement and transformation that had made research and learning conducive in the campus, appealed to companies, organisations and public-spirited individuals for adequate support and collaboration by funding research and teaching activities.
He announced the introduction of VC’s special award to best performing first year student in each of the faculties as a way of encouraging hardwork and excellence, and urged the new intakes to take advantage of the award.
