Commissioner Dedicates Women’s Day To Amaechi
The Rivers State Commissioner for Women Affairs, Hon. Joba West says, the International Women’s Day celebration on October 26, 2012 in the state was dedicated to the 2007 Supreme Court Victory of Governor Chibuike Rotimi Ameachi which restored peace in Rivers State after seven years of militancy in the Niger Delta region.
Hon. West made this known Friday in her opening remark at the just-concluded International Women’s Day celebration in Rivers State.
“This year’s International Women’s Day celebration in Rivers State is a remarkable one and first of its kind.
It is remarkable because women in the state also commemorate the 2007 Supreme Court victory of Rt Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amechi, which helped the state to have peace after much killing of innocent souls and other criminal activities in the state”, West said.
The Commissioner noted that the yearly women’s day celebration has fostered unity and encouraged women to be partakers in the governance of the state and at the federal level.
According to her, women are occuping most sensitive positions of trust in the Governor Amaechi-led administration than in the past administrations.
She tasked women of the state to encourage and support the present government’s policies and programmes to maintain its developmental strides.
Hon. West also urged the women to ensure peace at their various homes saying “when there is peace in every home there would be peace in the society.
Also speaking, the Sole Administrator of the Greater Port Harcourt City, Mrs Aleruchi Cookey-Gam tasked women to be more committed to the training of their children to enable them assume their rightful place at the right time.
She said: “it is only when the young generation is monitored properly to have better education and good behaviour that we can have a better society and bright future.”
She commended Governor Ameachi’s administration for ensuring women in the state are not left behind in the scheme of things and lauded the Governor’s wife Dame Judith Amaechi for standing firm with her husband and ensure that women in the state are accommodated in the policies and programme of the government.
Highlights of the Women’s Day celebration include March-past by various women groups from local government areas, Inter-football march among the state legislators’ wives, local government area chairmen’s wives, Commissioners wives and selected local government areas women teams as well as inter-Senatorial District debate on the role of parents in the life of a child and whether house wife of government officials are to be paid salary or not, among other activities
