RSG To Safeguard Citizens From Multinationals
Rivers State Commissioner for Chieftaincy and Community Affairs, Hon. Charles Okaye, says the state government will ensure that its citizens do not suffer in the hands of multi-national companies operating in the State.
Responding to questions from journalists in his office, Hon Okaye explained that the companies owe its host communities amongst other things, the responsibility to provide jobs and basic amenities that could improve their living standards.
He noted that non compliance by such companies who signed the Global Memorandum of Understanding (GMoU) with their hosts has been a major cause of disputes between the parties.
According to him, there has been a marked improvement in the relationship between the companies and their hosts which was made possible through the efforts of the State government, adding that cases of grievance and protests have also been relatively reduced.
Hon. Okaye disclosed that his ministry is partnering with the Community Trusts and Cluster Board of SHELL to enhance the development of the communities, adding that due process is followed in the siting of project in the communities.
On the issue of chieftaincy, Hon. Okaye observed that chieftaincy is not only the problem that tears communities apart, stressing that “it is not only the problem of chieftaincy that a community has, but that each community as a unit has its own problems even between members themselves”.
