Community Leader Tasks Mothers On Immunisation
The Odionwere (Head) of Abudu, a community in Edo, Mr Benjamin Ehigie, on Saturday called on mothers to take advantage of the four-day National Immunisation Plus Days.
Ehigie made the call during the flag-off of the programme in Abudu, the headquarters of Orhionmwon Local Government Area (LGA) of Edo.
“How I wish it were possible for my generation to go back and take advantage of this opportunity, when we lost our siblings to diseases such as polio and measles.
“With this breakthrough in medicine, I pray that our children should take advantage of it and live in good health.
“This immunisation I hear will prevent our children against nasty diseases that in the past wrecked many families.
“I, therefore, call on mothers in the community and beyond to take advantage of this immunisation programme to save the lives of our children against polio and other diseases.’’
Earlier, the Chairman of the Council, Mr Dennis Edomwonyi, commended the Federal Government and other stakeholders for the initiative, saying: “it is a cost-effective strategy for preventing childhood killer diseases.
“Your combined efforts with that of the traditional, religious and community leaders in mobilising communities in our LGA to embrace immunisation services must be commended.
“However, with the upsurge of 56 cases of wide polio virus (WPV) for 2011, compared to 21 cases in 2010, indicates that we have to work harder to reverse this ugly trend this year.’’
Edomwonyi regretted that Nigeria remained the only African country with Pakistan and Afghanistan “that is still affected by polio.
“The only way to keep Nigeria free from these childhood killer diseases such as polio, measles and other diseases is by adhering to campaign and routine immunisation.’’
The Primary Health Coordinator in the LGA, Dr Daniel Odekina, expressed dismay at the lack of political will by past leaders to stamp out these childhood killer diseases.
Odekina, who said he was glad that the WPV was not present in the locality, however, urged all mothers to take the campaign seriously.
