Inconsistent Govt Policies, Bane Of Industrial Growth
A Port Harcourt-based Entrepreneur Chigbom Akaogwu, has identified government inconsistent policies as a major constraint to the industrial growth of the nation.
Akaogwu who made the observation on Saturday in an interview with The Tide in Port Harcourt, said that inconsistent government policies especially in the areas of stringent conditionality at the nation’s sea ports is responsible for the closure of most of the manufacturing companies in the country.
Akaogwu who is the Manging Director of C.A Enterprise Limited and a distributing agent, recalled that company like, Phillips Electronics stopped the manufacture of high technology electronics in Nigeria over decades due to several years of inconsistent government policies. He noted that the company as one of the first foreign firms to start manufacturing electronics in the country since 1960 got fed up with the inconsistent policies on goods clearance at the ports because of high tax rates.
According to him, the company could no longer cope with the stringent conditions imposed on it and was left with no other condition than to shutdown production, saying that bringing the company back to production will require consistency on the part of government as well as favourable policies, adequate power supply and removal of high and multiple taxes.
“Phillips electronics manufacturing factory in Lagos, Nigeria was the biggest in West Africa since 1960. It had a factory in Lagos that used to manufacture all kinds of household electronics but due to inconsistent government policies, it underwent a lot of challenges like high rate of various taxes and the factory was closed down,” he lamented.
He urged the Federal Government to ensure that policies survive the true test of time, also create enabling business environment that would encourage economic stability of the country and the survival of investments.
