NURSS Cautions Students Against Political Abuse
The National Union of
Rivers State Students (NURSS) has called on students nationwide to shun the habit of yielding themselves as tools in the hands of politicians for achieving their selfish ambitions.
In a Press Release jointly signed by the National President NURSS, Comrade Masi Lucky C. and Secretary, Comrade West Okeinaya L. and made available to The Tide, the body stated that such act by the students would deter their academic pursuits and mar their future.
The Union noted that politicians who are warming up for the forthcoming 2015 general elections have chosen the campuses as their playground wooing students and youths alike to achieve their quest.
“2015 is around the corner. Politicians are seeking for whoever that will be their prey. They have started introducing different political and pressure groups in the tertiary institutions. The University campuses have suddenly become the centre of attraction for their selfish ambitions. I use this medium to advise and spur all good meaning students to beware of these selfish rulers who call themselves leaders”, it stated.
Describing Nigerian Political system as being devoid of clear ideology, the Union said such state has enhanced the criss crossing of politicians from one party to the other resulting in the display of dreadful roles in the nations democratic process.
According to the statement “as a student leader, I see that our political system is devoid of clear ideaology as we have in the American system. The problems faced by Nigeria such as unemployment, epileptic power supply, insecurity, social unrest among others are not problems caused by the various political parties but the ideology they lack”.
The student body who further blamed Godfatherism and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for their romance with political leaders said however, that Nigeria can only be a better nation if individuals and monitoring bodies of political parties and elections would determine and vote on ideology of the candidate and his party as well as collaboration rather than critics.
