RSG Threatens Illegal Task Force Operators
The Rivers Government has threatened to arrest anybody or group harassing and extorting money from the public under the aegis of task forces in the state.
Dr Dawari George, the state Commissioner for Energy and Natural Resources, gave the warning when he paid a condolence visit to the executives of the Petroleum Tanker Drivers Union (PTD) at Alesa in Eleme area of the state on Friday.
The commissioner said touting under any guise was an offence in the state and warned that anybody or group caught in the act would be handed over to security agents for necessary action.
George, who was reacting to a complaint by the PTD executives on the activities of a group called Petroleum Products Monitoring Task Force, said the government was not aware of the operations of the body.
“I totally object to the claim that this task force is an instrument of the Rivers Government. In case you come by any of their members interfering with products coming into the state, especially kerosene and petrol, next time arrest them,” he said.
“There is no task force in place and anyone parading himself as a member of such is an impostor and should be treated as such.”
The commissioner said his visit was to commiserate with the tanker drivers over the recent accident involving a tanker which resulted in the death of some persons at Eleme.
He said the government had awarded a contract for the rehabilitation of the Eleme end of the Port Harcourt road.
The Tide On Sunday source reports that the Eleme- Oyibo end of the Port Harcourt/Aba dual carriageway has been in a deplorable condition for some months, resulting in avoidable accidents.
Responding, Chief John Amajuoyi, the Chairman of the PTD in Rivers, thanked the commissioner for the visit and expressed displeasure over the incident, which he blamed on government’s neglect of roads maintenance.
“The menace of touts, mostly at Emohua and Igwuruta areas of the state, has become a serious source of concern to tanker drivers and we appeal that something should be done about their operations,” Amajuoyi said.
