Pensioners Picket NIPOST Over Unpaid Pensions
Protesting pensioners have locked the doors of the Nigerian Postal Service (NIPOST) in Calabar over unpaid pension and gratuity.
Our source said that the protesting NIPOST pensioners shut the doors of the NIPOST office while workers remained inside.
The Vice Chairman of NIPOST Pensioners Association Cross River chapter, Mr Christopher Andem, said that the pensioners had no intention of vacating the premises until their requests were met.
“We have nowhere to go; we must remain here until the management and the Federal Government listen to us and answer us,‘’ he said. He said that their members had not received their pensions for 2011 and for November and December 2012, saying: “some of us are being owed 21 months arrears”.
According to him, many of those who retired in 2005 and 2006 have not received their pensions for 2011, while some who retired lately are yet to receive their gratuities.
He alleged that there were also short payments to some of the pensioners, which had accumulated over time without being paid.
“Unfortunately, we have not heard anything; so it is as bad as that and that is why we have decided to seal the place.‘’
He said that the association had lost five members and their children dropped out of school for lack of money.
“Incidentally, their families have not heard anything about their entitlements. Meanwhile, the Area Postal Manager (APM) Calabar, Mr Emmanuel Nwankwo has called for cooperation of members of the public over the closure of NIPOST by the protesting pensioners. He told newsmen that the management of NIPOST was doing everything possible to solve the impasse “We are in constant touch with Abuja and management is currently meeting with the pensioners and hopefully everything will be okay as soon as possible.
He called on the pensioners to remain peaceful, adding that the management had directed “that we should allow them to remain inside as long as they remain peaceful’’.
