Rivers
ONOLGA To Establish Tourism Board
A bill for the establishment and management of a tourism board in Opobo/Nkoro Local Government Area of Rivers State has been passed by the Opobo/Nkoro Legislative Assembly.
According to the leader of the Legislative Assembly, Hon Atedo Sam Sam-Jaja, the essence of the passage of the bill would not only give legal backing to tourism activities but would also help to boost tourism activities in the area.
Hon Sam Sam-Jaja said that considering the terrain of the area and the efforts of the OIB (Opobo International Boat regatta) to internationalise tourism activities in the area, the government, with the passage of this bill, would do its best to see that tourism becomes a major revenue earner in the area.
The Legislative Assembly leader said that the local government area was to acquire a portion of the newly sandfilled area in Opobo town for development into a tourist centre.
In his speech, Hon Godswill Fubara, councillor for ward 5 and sponsor of the bill, said that the establishment and management law for a tourism board in the area was of immense benefits that would improve the local economy, attract tourists and visitors to the area, and generate revenue for the council.
