Egi Moves Against High Bride Price
The people of Egi clan in Ogba Kingdom have set in motion, a process geared towards reducing the current high bride price in the area.
A committee set up last year has released recommendations which has drastically slashed the bride price.
The submission also reduced the cost of burial ceremonies as well as standardised the process of emergence to chieftaincy stools in the area.
Speaking to The Tide, during the official fixing ceremony of the 2012 edition of Egwu Ogba (Ogba festival) Mr Raphael Eke said.
Last year, chiefs, elders and opinion leaders agreed to harmonies the bride price, cost of burial ceremony and standardise chieftaincy issues in line with modern realities and today, the committee read out its proposal before the community people,” he said.
He explained that it cost between N1m and above to many in Egi but with the submission of the committee, it would take about N200.000 or less to marry and burials ceremony which used to be expensive has also been drastically reduced.
According to him, the high bride price in the area had negative implications as it discourages people from getting married and atimes forced them into sinful living together even when they were not married legally while expensive burials had made people to mortgage property.
With the new proposal already sent to the traditional rulers and Chiefs Council for their final endorsement and also check situation where people take chieftaincy titles without proper adherence to due process.
Prince Udobueze Arugu Obulor, of the Umuakoku family announced that the 2012 edition of the festival would begin on 17th August after the story telling night on 16th August.
