Delta HoS Injured As Police Foil Abduction
An attempt to kidnap the Delta State Head of Service (HoS), Mr Okey Ofili was on Sunday night foiled in Asaba by the police.
Meanwhile, Ofili escaped death by the whiskers in the process, as the suspected kidnappers shot him in the leg.
He is recuperating in an undisclosed hospital in the state capital.
The Tide gathered, the hoodlums numbering about five swooped on their victim at the popular Inter-Bau Roundabout and dragged him into their waiting vehicle.
Sources said Mr Ofili did not resist the hoodlums, but in their attempt to ensure smooth operation, they shot into the air sporadically to scare away any resistance from on-lookers who scampered for safety.
However, the shooting attracted policemen who were said to be on routine patrol.
The patrol team acted swiftly, gave the kidnappers a hot chase. While the patrol team was closing in on the hoodlums, they shot their victim, pushed him out of their car and sped away.
Spokesman of the Delta State Police Command, DSP Charles Muka who confirmed the incident, said, though no arrest was made, the police had spread their dragnet to track down the bandits.
In a related development, Muka said the command over the weekend arrested five suspected kidnappers in Agbor, while attempting to collect N150,000 ransom from family members of their victims.
The all male suspects’ Precious Tuyor, Monday Imu, Ofashi Paulinus, Ifeakachukwu Nmor and Obiakor Ambrose had last Friday, whisked away a family of three.
The victims were Mrs Adaugo Monyei, her two-year-old sister and her sister identified as Onuauogu Jenifer. They were bundled into the waiting vehicle belonging to their abductors at Summit Junction, along the Benin-Onitsha Expressway in Asaba.
