RSG To Commission Four Vehicle Terminals
The Commissioner for Transport, Rivers State, Hon George Tolofari, has disclosed that the four major terminals built by the government have been completed and are ready for commissioning.
Hon Tolofari, who made this known in his address at the Ministry of Transport Road Safety Stakeholders Forum organised in collaboration with Shell Petroleum Development Company of Nigeria in Port Harcourt recently said the terminals were built to decongest the city and its environs.
According to him, the terminals were situated at Omagwa, Oyigbo, Eleme and Emohua, which are entry points into Port Harcourt.
He said that 80 per cent of road accidents and traffic gridlock within Port Harcourt and its environs were caused by bad driving, adding that in line with the United Nations declaration on the Decade for Action on Road Safety, the Ministry of Transport had created a platform to drive home the gospel of road safety to all users in the state.
Hon Tolofari hinted that the ministry had in the last four years carried out series of reforms in order to build an efficient transport system, with legal and regulatory framework, to be operated by professionals in the transport business.
The transport commissioner further hinted that in view of realising this objective, the Rivers State Road Traffic Management Authority (TIMARIV) was set up, under the State Road Traffic Law No. 6 of 2009, and commended them for instilling discipline in all road users within Port Harcourt and its environs.
During the forum, speakers called on motorists to respect traffic laws, ensure discipline and be patient with their fellow drivers on the road.
