A’ Ibom Youths Distrupt Oil Firm Activities
Some youths in Mbo Local Government of Akwa Ibom have disrupted activities at the Stubb Creek Marginal Oil Field operated by Universal Energy Resources Ltd.
President, Mbo Youth Development Association, Mr Eteka Etim, told newsmen in Mbo that they were protesting against the refusal of the firm to sign MoU with the host community.
Etim alleged that the oil firm had operated for six years without an MOU with the host community and had not done any welfare programme for the community.
“We were conducting a very peaceful demonstration when Policemen stormed the scene and dispersed us.
“The Policemen arrested 10 of our youths and shot one. So, for that reason and the act the policemen put up, the struggle will continue till we get to the end.
“The law gives us a right to express our grievances in a non-violent way and we shall seek redress in court,” Etim said.
Mr Anietie Eyo, the Divisional Police Officer in Mbo Division, confirmed the arrest of 10 members of the group.
Eyo said that the youths had been transferred to the Area Command Headquarters in Oron where they were currently being detained.
He said that the Police would fortify its manpower to forestall further escalation of the situation.
When our correspondent visited the firm in Unyenghe community near Oron, the workers were in groups discussing the incident.
An official of the firm, who preferred anonymity, said that he could not comment on the matter because the headquarters was in Lagos.
Universal Energy Resources is a joint venture between the Akwa Ibom government and a Chinese Oil firm, SINOPEC.
The project is to develop the abundant gas resources at the Stubb Creek oil field for power generation.
