Ex-MOSOP President Condemns Attack On Tai Community
A former President of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), Mr. Legborsi Pyagbara, has condemned the recent violent attack on Ledor community in Tai Local Government Area of Rivers State and critically injuring its Deputy Paramount Ruler, Chief Nule Yarakpor by unknown gunmen.
Pyagbara, lamented that Ledor being one of the sacked communities in Ogoniland during the General Sani Abacha military regime n 1994, had not fully recuperated and many of its exiled citizens had to return, hence, had been intermittently attacked and the latest over the weekend.
The Tide’s source gathered that Ledor community which is endowed with crude oil was attacked by unknown gunmen, injuring scores, including one of its monarch’s, Chief Monday Yarakpo.
Pyagbara, who is the Executive Director of African Foundation for Energy and Sustainable Development, during a media conference in Port Harcourt , alleged that most of the attacks on the community are from neighbouring local governments.
He called on the police in the State to intervene and set up an impartial investigation into the attacks.
Pyagbara said, “We are using this opportunity to call on the authorities to wade into issues of Ledor community that was sacked at the height of the Ogoni crisis.
“We had a situation where 13 of the communities were completely deserted and most members of those communities have not returned to the communities and the few that had returned have been under threats by all manner of people.
“We are calling on the police authorities and the Rivers State Government to embark on an impartial investigation into the attacks, we can’t continue in this type of situation where attacks go on, people report and nothing is being done, it increases the level of immunity.”
He appealed to the Rivers state Government to provide medical support for those critically injured during the recent attacks.
“We are very disturbed by the recent attack in ledor community in Tai over the weekend, we call for proper and full medical attention to be given to those who have been wounded, particularly Mr Monday yarakpo and others.”
The Rivers State police command is yet to comment on the incident.
