‘Sylva’ll Dump PDP If’…
There are indications that Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa State may dump the ruling Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, if he is not given the party’s ticket for next year’s governorship election in the state.
The atmosphere at a welcome reception organised by the State chapter of the Association of Local Government of Nigeria, (ALGON) at the weekend in Yenagoa, was charged, with various banners sending the message to the appropriate quarters.
The address by the State Chairman of ALGON and Chairman, Southern Ijaw Local Government Area, Chief Timipa Tiwe Orunimighe on possible movement to another platform for the Governor to realise his second term bid was a confirmation that Governor Sylva was facing so much heat within the ranks of the PDP.
A very big banner at the Peace Park reads, “ Without Sylva, PDP Fails in Bayelsa”.
According to Chief Tiwe Orunimighe, it would be wise for the party to give the ticket to Sylva or apparently be ready to damn the consequence of losing the state.
“And so, we the custodians of democracy at the grassroots, have decided, come 2012, and if you look at the banners here, we are telling our great party some thing. We are the party. The party is not human, it is the human being that is the party. We are the only constant variable in politics, the human being,” he said.
Orunimighe said ALGON in the state had mobilised the people because, according to him, ‘elections are conducted in local government areas and not in Abuja”.
Already, many big shots who left the party in the wake of last April botched governorship elections are back to jostle for the governorship ticket of the party in next month’s primaries.
They include Chief Timi Alaibe, former Deputy Governor, Mr. Peremobowei Ebebi, and former State Chairman of the PDP,Chief Rufus Abadi.
Member of the Federal House of Representatives for Sagbama/Ekeremor, Hon. Siriake Henry Dickson and a few others have picked the PDP governorship nomination forms and may be enjoying the support of President Goodluck Jonathan, whom sources allege is not disposed to backing the governor for another term.
Addressing the gathering, at the Peace Park, Governor Timipre Sylva, however, said he had received the blessings of President Goodluck Jonathan, to go ahead and contest the governorship election and continue with the transformation agenda in the state.
Said Sylva, “ May I say that I am a faithful follower of the foot steps of our great President, Dr. Ebele Jonathan. We have laid a firm foundation and nobody will distract us. When you vote us again at the primaries and later the general elections, we will continue to build on the firm foundation that had been laid by former governors of Bayelsa State and myself”.
The Governor thanked ALGON for the support and the grassroot mobilization for him, saying the crowd at the gathering sends strong signal of victory at the grassroot level.
