Lawmaker Explains Investment In Computer Education
The member representing Khana/Gokana Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Dumnamene Robinson Dekor, has given reasons for his resolve to invest in the education sector.
Dekor, who gave the explanation recently when he handed over and mobilized the contractor handling the construction of an Information Communication and Technology (ICT) Centre project at Birabi Memorial Grammar School (BMGS) Bori, Khana Local Government Area, noted that education remained the bedrock of development for the people of Ogoni.
Describing the project as world-class, he said the computer-based education initiative would increase the knowledge of the people in information technology.
“The computer-based education would expand the knowledge base of the people and make them more relevant in this 21st century”, he said.
The Lawmaker, who facilitated the ICT centre via the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), urged the people of Ogoni to avail themselves of the opportunity of putting the centre to proper use upon completion.
Noting that most of his projects were focused on education and human capacity development, he said the ICT Centre initiative was timely, given the rush for computer education and training globally.
According to him, the more the people have computer education in Ogoniland, the better for the larger populace.
Dekor, who was the Chairman, House Committee on Host Communities, stated that he preferred to empower people through education to giving them what he called ‘material things’.
He said when completed, centre will also serve both as a centre for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), and National Open University of Nigeria (NOUN) for the good of all Ogoni residents and Nigerians at large.
“I had provided Keke Napep (tricycle) and motorcycles before and I discovered that in most cases the man that gets it, sells it off immediately. Sometimes, those that need them don’t even get them”, he explained.
Another reason he gave for embarking o the ICT project was to enable the people to be self-reliant and educationally balanced.
”I believe when you offer people education, you open the space for them to buy their own motorcycles and their own cars. That is what we are trying to do, to address the issues of education”, he said.
The former Deputy Speaker in the State House of Assembly and Commissioner for Works in the State also hinted that the ICT Centre would be furnished with first-class internet facilities with a sitting capacity of about 500 students.
He further informed that the centre was sited at the famous BMGS, Bori, due to its popularity, and importance to the people of Igoni.
Noting that the ICT project is the first of its kind in Rivers South-East Constituency, Dekor said plans have reached advanced stage for the construction of a road and a bridge to link the hinter areas like Kor and Kpong, adding that Bori Town was getting congested.
