Sports Promoter Wants Firms To Sponsor Traditional Wrestling
The Head of Project of Xtreme Kick Sports, Efezino Akpotu, organiser of the Smack Down Traditional Wrestling Tournament sponsored by Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC) has called on multi-National Companies to promote and sponsor traditional wrestling in Nigeria.
Akpotu made the call in an interview with Tideports shortly after they ended the maiden edition of the tournament last weekend in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State.
According to him, if traditional wrestling is developed, it can be exported like other traditional Sports like sumo wrestling in Japan.
I am telling you, if we promote our traditional wrestling, it will get to a stage where it can be exported just like sumo wrestling in Japan. It will surprised you to hear that Americans travel to Japan to do sumo wrestling so, it is very important we promote ours.” Akpotu said.
He stated that the reason they organised the competition was to revive the cultural heritage and bring people together in the spirit of Friendship.
This tournament is geared towards bringing people together and revival of our cultural heritage.”
The Head of projects, described the tournament as must successful, as all the four states invited attended and no causality was recorded during the competition. Also all athletes were treated very well.
He said that their major challenge was lack of facilities, stating that there was for traditional wrestlers in Nigeria.
He added that the tournament was supposed to have held at a school field, but was done indoors due to rainfall.
