ADP Releases N11.5m To Farmers In C’River
In a bid to improve commercial agriculture in Cross River State, the State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Dr. Sandy Onor, has issued cheques worth N11,521,917.51 to beneficiaries of the Commercial Agriculture Development Project in the state.
Presenting the cheques to beneficiaries, Dr. Onor urged them to make judicious use of the funds and improve on their farming methods to make their life more meaningful.
The Coordinator of the Commercial Agriculture Project, Mr. Durkham Amah disclosed that the objective of the agricultural scheme is to improve the business of agriculture and make it successful by shifting from subsistence to commercial agriculture.
He maintained that the project strives to boost the income of the beneficiaries through a value chain approach with strong emphasis on stakeholder participation.
According to him, the strategic thrust of the project was to support access to productivity, enhance technologies, improve market access, build and improve capacity in areas of need and to improve access to rural infrastructure like network of roads and electricity
Mr. Amah further disclosed that the Commercial Agriculture World Bank Assisted Programme has been going on for the past two years and has been able to work towards achieving the objectives of the project which is to strengthen agricultural production system and also facilitate access to market for value chains among small and medium scale commercial farmers in the state.
He revealed that 11 sub-project proposals were already being implemented while five contracts for road constructions have been awarded, adding that beneficiaries have gained from capacity building training workshops organised by the project.
The chairman of Commercial Agriculture Development Association in the state Chief Owali Ilem, explained that the project is a pilot programme involving Enugu, Kano, Kaduna and Cross River State and advised recipients to save in order to improve their worth and environment.
Chief Ilem appealed to the State Coordinator to assess the beneficiaries properly adding that the programme provides an opportunity for them to get more committed for a better output.
