MDGs: Commissioner Seeks Accurate Data, Information Gathering
Rivers State Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning,, Mr Charles Gogo Levi, says the gathering and storage of accurate data and information is a critical factor for the attainment of the Millenium Development Goals (MDGs).
Gogo Levi who oversees the state Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning stated this at the inauguration /swearing-in of the first executive of the Nigerian Statistical Association (NSA) Rivers State.
He was categorical that without accurate data, planning and development would be a mirage.
Represented by the permanent secretary, Sir Awoye Bobmanuel, the Commissioner however charged members of he Association to be diligent in the discharge of their duties.
He said the ministry was committed in providing adequate support to the Association to enable it succeed, and advised to submit their needs to the ministry for consideration.
The national president of the Association, Mr B.O. Amobi in his speech, thanked the State Government for signing the statistical bill into law.
The national president who was represented by Alhaji Obo also warnred them against bias in the presentation of data.
Amobi also spoke of the need for unity among the rank and file of the members, saying that is key to the success of the leadership team.
Earlier, in his welcome address, the new state chairman of the Association Mr Emma Ogbugo highlighted the achievements of the Association which included the completion of its draft constitution, participation at a public hearing of the Rivers State Bureau of Statistics Bill 2010.
He called for the establishment of a pool for data collection and analysis, appointment of qualified personnel to man satisfied departments in ministries and proper funding of ministries and parastatals in the state.
