Fix East-West Road, Association Tells FG
The East-West Road Communities Association (EWRCA), has cried out to the Federal Government over the non-completion of the East-West Road which was started since 11 years ago.
The communities are worried with the deplorable condition of the road because it is necessary to avoid what happened in 2012 and 2014 when at Okogbe and Ahoada respectively where more than 600 persons were killed in two accidents which resulted in two petrol tankers’ explosion.
The use of a single lane on a road meant to be a dual carriageway is also now contributing to constant road accidents.
Rising from an emergency meeting of Bayelsa State and various local government areas in Rivers State where the road transverses, the communities appealed to the Federal Government to hasten the completion of the road to alleviate the hardship encountered by them and other road users.
They reminded the Federal Government to bear in mind that the road project was embarked upon considering its importance to the economy and the entire nation.
“As an oil producing area in Niger Delta, the road is hub of business activities of oil and gas haulage strategic and to the rest of the country”.
The inability of the federal government to complete the road is also contributing enormously to the current economic recession in the country, since vehicles used in transporting oil and gas to other parts of the country are in constant break-down because of the terrible condition of the road.
EWRCA is demanding that the Federal Government should hasten the work on the road to show its sincerity in remedying the wanton neglect of the Niger Delta region.
