Peace Excites Okrika Community
Okrika Town, in Okrika
Local Government Area of Rivers State was agog recently, as men, women, youth, religious and traditional leaders turned up in their numbers to celebrate peace in the area.
The event which was organised by an NGO known as ‘Renaissance Okrika’, to mark the 2016 edition of the International Peace Day was held at the Okrika Unity Centre.
Speaking at the event, the Hon. Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr. Austin Tam-George, described peace as fundamental to sustainable development in any community, state or nation.
The commissioner who was represented by the Director of Publication in the Ministry of Information and Communications, Mr. Dango Oruwari commended the people of Okrika for the peace in the area.
The commissioner who was a Special Guest of Honour at the event also lauded the NGO for their effort in building peace across the entire Wakrike nation, and urged them not to relent in their efforts.
Speaking with newsmen during the event, the President of the NGO, Mr. Kelvin Ibanichuka, said the vision of Renaissance Okrika was to build and promote peace among all stakeholders in Wakrike nation.
As part of efforts of promoting peace, he said the NGO had over the years celebrated and honoured distinguished son’s and daughters of Wakrike nation who had made outstanding contributions to the peace and development of the area.
Ibanichuka, disclosed that this year’s edition featured, the Omuaru Wari award for 31 distinguished recipients in various categories.
Speaking with newsmen, shortly after receiving an award, the Head of Dokubo Ado Royal House of Okrika, Chief Akuro George, thanked the NGO for the award and re-affirmed his commitment to the promotion of peace in the area.
Also speaking, the Head of Oforibokakaka War Canoe House of Bolo, Chief Marshal O. Oforibokakaka, said the award was a recognition of service.
He pledged to continue to render services to his community at all times.
