RSG To Commence New Biometric Exercise Soon – Commissioner
The Rivers State Govern
ment says it would soon begin a full biometric system for all civil servants in the state.
This was part of the statement by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Dr Austin Tam-George, during the week while addressing newsmen in Port Harcourt.
He said the biometric system will aid the state to get the proper number of workers in pay roll.
Tam-George recalled that the just concluded Bank Verification Number (BVN) exercise saved up to N1 billion for the government .
According to him, biometric would not only enhance accountability, but will ensure all financial leakages are checked.
He explained that the system was part of Governor Nyesom Wike’s effort to promote efficiency and good governance.
Some civil servants who spoke under anonymity said the process should not be used to witch-hunt perceived enemies of the government.
They also acknowledged the issue of ghost workers in the state, saying the biometric system would expose them.
The civil servants maintained that over the years, the civil service has been bedeviled with malpractices occasioned by poor data system.
They reasoned that with a vibrant data system, many bad eggs in the system would be forced out.
The Tide learnt that the planned biometric has sent some cold blood in the spine of workers who came through the back door.
It was further learnt that the recent BVN order by the government also straightened the payment system as many workers experienced a top up in their February salary.
