Cholera Hits Andoni
A cholera outbreak may have claimed the lives of some children in Andoni local Government Area.
Some of the affected communities include, Ngo Ukwa Agana, Okoloile, Ebukuma amongst others.
Residents blamed the incident on the absence of potable drinking water in the affected communities.
Some residents told The Tide that, the absence of a good drinking water made the communities to depend on satch water, some of which have no NAFDAC approval.
The Tide also learnt that the absence of medical personnels at the General Hospital at Ngo has led some residents to patronize private and herbal medical practitioners adding that some patients squeeze water from bitterleaf to treat vomiting and stooling.
Mr. John Idaah, who lost his eleven years old daughter to the incident, told The Tide that he took his daughter to a private medical practitioner at Agana, with view to preventing the girl from dying.
Idaah regretted the incident and urged the government to do something about the issue of drinking water in Andoni.
When The Tide visited the local Government Secretariat at Ngo, all the offices were under lock and key as the workers were said to be on holiday, while at the General Hospital Ngo, some Nurses were seen battling to save the lives of some children brought by their parents.
When contacted, on phone, the Chairman, Caretaker Committee of Andoni Local Government Council, Evangelist Ikwut Emmanuel claimed ignorance of the situation as the Council had intervened in Ibot-Irem Community when it received report of an outbreak of the cholera in the area.
He promised to move round the communities to assess the situation, but regretted that most health personnel in the council are now partially on duty due to the on-going strike.
