We’ll Ensure Sustainable Security In Ikwerre-Chairman
The Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Council of Rivers State, Dr. Samuel Nwanosike, on Friday, reiterated that he and his team would continue to play their part in ensuring a sustainable security development across the local government.
He stated this while speaking during a one-day security summit organised by his administration at the council secretariat, Isiokpo.
According to him, “As a government, we will continue to do our part to ensure sustainable security development in our LGA”.
He explained that the security summit was aimed at proffering solutions to the challenges posed by insecurity in the area.
The council chairman identified such challenges as cultism, drug abuse, gender-based crimes, herdsmen, small arms proliferation, and kidnapping.
“The summit was designed to provide an all-inclusive platform for the local government security stakeholders, with a view to finding solutions to the challenges posed by insecurity.
“The security summit today will also help us develop a blue print on the numerous security challenges facing the LGA”, he said.
Nwanosike recalled that when he came on board as a Caretaker Committee Chairman of Ikwerre LGA, the security situation in the communities of the LGA was frightening and worrisome and he started drawing a security architecture for the LGA, but time could not allow him to finish it.
He said the security architecture was achieved as soon as he was elected as Executive Chairman in 2018.
In order to ensure that the youths are engaged in gainful ventures, he noted that his administration has provided empowerment programmes and built signature projects across the 13 Wards of the LGA.
A committee to oversee the findings of the summit and present a report which will be published as communiqué and also sent to the Legislative Assembly for passage into bye-law was constituted.
The Area Commander of Isiokpo Police Division was appointed Chairman, while the Legal Adviser of Ikwerre LGA is to serve as Secretary.
Other members of the committee include the Principal Secretary to Ikwerre Council Chairman, Heads of DSS, JTF, and NSCDC in Ikwerre LGA, and the Leader of Ikwerre Legislative Assembly.
The summit was attended by traditional rulers, Community Development Committees (CDCs), Department of State Security (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Army, Nigeria Police, non-governmental security agencies like local vigilante and critical stakeholders.
The summit was interactive and talks delivered on the place of security in agriculture, amongst others.
