2023: CUPP Alleges Secret Court Action Seeking To Stop BVAS’ Use
The Coalition of United Political Parties, CUPP, Wednesday, alleged that there was a secret court action to stop the use of Bimoda Voter Accreditation System, BVAS, in the 2023 general elections.
Addressing a press conference in Abuja, the coalition’s spokesman, Ikenga Ugochinyere, claimed it was in possession of evidence to that effect.
It, however, did not disclose the plaintiff to the suit it claimed had been filed in a court in the South East region of the country.
Specifically, Ugochinyere said the vigilance team of CUPP discovered the suit at Owerri Federal High Court where it was filed since August 24, 2022.
Ugochinyere displayed extracts of the National Voters Register which it claimed were part of, at least, ten million fake registrations done by one of the political parties.
“The names were sourced from both within and outside Nigeria, including some African countries such as Ghana, Cameroon, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Togo, Guinea, Gambia and countries outside Africa including Jamaica, Brazil and New Zealand,” he alleged.
He also showed several registrations which were captured from passport photographs and other photos.
He said: “Significant among the discoveries in the register is the fact that majority of the foreign names were all born in 1983 despite whether their photographs showed they were old or young.
“ Many people were also shown to have been born between 1900 and 1914 yet their photographs were those of young people.
“Equally, many male photos had their gender written as female and vice versa.”
Ugochinyere further alleged that the “Chairman of Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, Prof Mahmood Yakubu, is under pressure to announce a change to the Commission’s hard stance on the compulsory use of the BVAS machine for accreditation or get sacked as Chairman of the Commission.”
According to him,” CUPP intercepted intelligence which has led to the discovery of the suit filed seeking to nullify the BVAS and exposure of the massive compromise in the voters register.
“The third leg of the plot is to sack the National Chairman through a suspension as the plotters know they cannot get the required numbers from the National Assembly for an outright sack”.
To this end,the coalition, he said, has “called on international partners, local and international observer groups, civil society and the general public to help it and protect democracy.”
CUPP said “the success of any of these plots will erode the integrity and credibility of the electoral process and deny Nigerians the sovereign right to freely choose their leaders.”

Don’t Risk Your Legacy, Citizen Begs Jonathan Against 2027 Presidential Race
In a letter titled, “An Open Letter to Former President Goodluck Jonathan,” the observer said Dr Jonathan should be careful not to allow himself to be drawn into partisan calculations driven by ambition rather than national interest.
He cautioned the former president against allowing himself to be used by what he described as desperate political interests.
“I believe this is the time to protect the good name and legacy you have built over the years. You should not allow yourself to be used by desperate political elements who may be more interested in their own ambitions than in the future of Nigeria,” the letter read.
The Social Commentator further warned Dr Jonathan to be wary of those advocating for his comeback, claiming many of them were previously opposed to his administration.
“Many of those calling for your return today were your antagonists, those who frustrated your government back then. You should be careful not to become a pawn in a game designed by others or else they will stain your white with their ‘roforofo’,” he said.
He maintained that Dr Jonathan’s legacy remains defined by his decision to concede defeat in 2015, which he described as a landmark moment in Nigeria’s democratic history.
“Your legacy was built through years of public service and your decision to put the country’s peace above personal ambition at a critical moment in Nigeria’s history. That legacy should not be put at risk because of the desperation of a few politicians,” he added.
Mr Adenuga also alleged that some of the promoters of Dr Jonathan’s return have lost credibility in the public space.
“The truth is that some of the people pushing you to contest have already damaged their own reputations. They should not be allowed to stain your legacy with their soiled hands. What they could not achieve on their own should not be pursued through your name and goodwill,” he stressed.
He concluded by urging the former president to remain above political manoeuvring and protect his place in history.
“History has been kind to you. Preserve that honour and remain above the political games of those who want to use your name for their own purposes,” he wrote.
Recall that former President Goodluck Jonathan recently emerged as the presidential candidate of the Kabiru Turaki-led Interim National Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following a special convention held in Abuja, where delegates ratified his nomination ahead of the 2027 general elections.
