Legion Offers University Scholarship To 50 Fallen Members’ Relatives In Rivers
The Nigerian Legion, Rivers State Command, last Friday, awarded university scholarships to 50 students who are children, widows and dependants of our fallen heroes.
The event, held at the Conference Hall of the Rivers State Ministry of Justice, was chaired by the Honourable Commissioner for Education, Rivers State, and was well attended by legionnaires, representatives of the Nigerian Army and families of fallen heroes.
Speaking at the event, Prof. Ebeku commended the leader of the Nigerian Legion for his passion in driving the cause of the leqionnairers and charged the beneficiaries of the scholarship to be focused.
“You have an organisation that is responsible and led by a responsible person. The dividend of what you are getting today is because of his dogged fight and the request he has never failed to present before the state governor”
“When you enter the school with scholarship, don’t joke with it; make sure you use it to succeed so that you will be able to tell the story and what have been done for you, and remember you owe society to do the same”.
Professor Ebeku stressed that the state government has always supported the Legion, noting that the governor recognises the labour of the heroes past and has demonstrated this by supporting the Legion
“Governor of the state, His Excellency Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, will always say he will never forget their service to this nation and what you are seeing here today is the major contribution of the state government and the benevolence of His Excellency, Chief Nyesom Wike”.
“Today will mark the beginning of good things to come; do not take this opportunity for granted. You have an organisation that is responsible and this is coming to wipe tears from the faces of many widows and children who hitherto do not have anyone to assist them”.
On his part, the State Chairman of the Nigerian Legion, Rivers State Chapter, Justice Chichi, commended the Rivers State government for floating the scholarship programme.
He said: “The key of the flagship was laid in the year 2020. Our patron, His Excellency, gave an executive approval for the establishment of this scholarship scheme, thereafter based on recommendation of the scholarship board, record was broken as 65 students drawn from the six geo-political zones were awarded scholarship to study in the Nigerian universities and this was funded by the Rivers State government”.
Speaking further, Chichi revealed that the policy has been enlarged to accommodate widows.
Other speakers also commended the state governor for his benevolence.

RSU Don Identifies Obstacles To Nigeria’s Road Construction Success
A professor of Highway Engineering at the Rivers State University (RSU), Prof. Emmanuel Osilemme Ekwulo, has identified poor designs, inadequate materials, insufficient testing, and lack of accountability as major obstacles to the success of highway construction projects in the country.
Ekwulo made this remark in Port Harcourt last Wednesday during the 128th inaugural lecture series of the university, where he presented a lecture titled “Removing Roadblocks: Rebuilding a Foundation for Reliable Highway Pavement Infrastructure.”
The university don lamented the consistent premature failures of road construction projects nationwide, despite huge investments by the government at all levels, attributing the problem to neglected basics and systemic principles in the industry.
According to him, rebuilding the foundation technically, institutionally, and ethically is crucial to building strong and lasting pavements.
Ekwulo emphasized the need for political will, professional integrity, and commitment to engineering excellence to overcome the challenges.
“The metaphoric roadblocks are those challenges causing premature failures,” Ekwulo said, adding that identifying and addressing these roadblocks is key to rebuilding the nation’s highways.
He recommended that institutions involved in road design and construction adopt a mechanistic-empirical design approach, and develop a comprehensive framework for implementing the Nigerian Imperial and Mechanistic Pavement Design System (NEMPADS) approach.
Ekwulo also advocated for mandatory traffic load analysis, strengthened university-industry collaboration, and funding for applied pavement research.
Corruption, he noted, is a major challenge in the profession, saying severe punitive measures are needed to curb shabby practices leading to premature road failures.
The Vice Chancellor of the university, Professor Isaac Zeb-Obipi, described Ekwulo’s lecture as interesting and intriguing, highlighting the importance of implementing solutions to Nigeria’s highway challenges.
The Vice Chancellor also described Ekwulo’s proposals as practical and applicable to government and industry stakeholders.
He said the university is committed to research aligned with national development goals, referencing its NDV-12 responsive consortium production framework.
Zeb-Obipi noted that Ekwulo’s recommendations are timely and solution-driven, and will contribute to addressing Nigeria’s highway challenges.
