PDP, Not Me Will Decide My Successor, Wike Tells Party Faithful

Published

on

The Rivers State Governor, Chief Nyesom Wike says Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) stakeholders in the state would meet at the appropriate time to decide his successor.
He stated that no one single person has the monopoly to decide where the governorship position of the party would be zoned to.
Wike made the assertion during the grand finale of the PDP local government campaign for the 17 April council elections that held at State School 1, Bori, Khana LGA, last Saturday.
“I don’t want to talk about politics of who is from here, and who is not from there. At the appropriate time, the PDP family will sit down, the leaders of the party will sit down and look at everything together, and then take a decision, not one man and even me as a governor can say this is where we are zoning it to.
“You cannot say that. It is not your father’s property. So, nobody should panic. It is not for one man who thinks he owns Rivers State. Somebody said he is going to give governorship slot to the Kalabaris. Now, it’s no longer to the Kalabaris, but to the riverine area”, the governor said.
He used the occasion to reiterate that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led Federal Government has failed Nigerians by not keeping to its social contract with the people of the country.
Accordingly, he has called on Nigerians not to listen any longer to empty promises of APC politicians who made promises of ensuring that the Naira and the Dollar are equivalent, create jobs for the youths, and contain insurgency, but failed to live up to their promises.
“Time has come, when you make a promise to the people, you must fulfill the promise. Time has come that we can no longer listen to empty promises of politicians like what the ruling party is doing today.
“When they came in 2015, they told Nigerians that the Naira and Dollar will be equal: N1 to $1. Today, what is the equivalent? N500 to $1!
“They said they will create jobs. Today, Nigeria has the highest unemployment rate in Africa: 33 per cent! “Why would there not be crisis?
“They said when they come; they will make sure insurgency is stopped. See what we are passing through today in this country: Every day, killing upon killing! So, they have failed us”, Wike said.
The governor, who noted that PDP was the party to reckon with as it always kept to its promises with the people, pointed out that there was no local government area in the state that his administration has not impacted.
Wike explained that when he was campaigning for the office of governor of Rivers State, he promised to dualize the Saakpenwa-Bori Road.
He stated that he has not only kept the promise, but that his administration has further awarded contract for the second phase of the road, which starts from Bori and ends at Kono.
“I have told you again that we are going to dualize from Bori to Kono. That has been awarded, and it is not just to award it, the money is there. Every month, N1billion would be given to the contractor. So, the contractor has no business to say that there is no money. And it must be completed in 14 months.
“So, PDP can go to any local government, and we can identify one thing or two that we have done for the people. There is no local government in this state that can say that PDP has not made impact.”
The governor urged the people of Khana to remain focused, steadfast and shun those bragging that they would use security to manipulate the 2023 elections in the state.
He further said, “All the bragging of using security, Nigeria is quite aware now. With the consciousness of Nigerians, it will be difficult now for you to use security agencies to manipulate election. Now, SARS is no more. Is SARS not gone? You think the Army will come again, after all what they have seen?”

2027: Be Politically Neutral, Fubara Tasks Traditional Rulers

Published

on

Rivers State Governor, Sir Siminalayi Fubara, has charged traditional rulers in the State to maintain neutrality, ensure fairness and uphold peace in their domains as the country prepares for the 2027 general elections.

Fubara gave the charge on Wednesday while declaring open the 126th,  127th and 128th Combined Quarterly Meeting of the Rivers State Traditional Rulers Council, in Port Harcourt.

The governor said the primary function of traditional rulers is to administer justice and ensure fairness, saying their conduct must not lead to division and unmanageable crises.

“Let me therefore, request, if that is the right word to use, that please, as we are entering into this political season actively, everyone should ensure that your conduct promoted  peace in your place. Your actions should not be what would lead to the division and multiple crisis that we cannot manage as a government.

“I  think with that, we can all live as one and we can also continue to make this progress that we are trying with all our mind, our body and our soul, to ensure that we deliver  to our dear State,” he said.

Fubara urged  the royal fathers to abide by the oath and constitution they swore to before ascending their respective stools,  in the interest of stability and progress of the State.

He also enjoined them  to set aside individual sentiments and place the interest of Rivers State above personal considerations, noting that this principle has guided his own day-to-day governance of the State.

“I want to enjoin everyone to keep aside issues of individual sentiments and ensure that the interest of our state supersedes whatever thing that we have in our mind. This is not just what I’m saying here, it is what I’ve also practiced and displayed in my day-to-day life in the governance of our dear State,” he said.

On the appeal for improved welfare  for traditional rulers, the governor clarified that the delay in actualising some of the requests they made  in the past was not from the government but from the inability of the Council to put its house in order.

Fubara explained that the issue of stipends paid to the traditional rulers by the local government councils,  was a statutory benefit provided for in the constitution and not what a state governor can change by mere verbal   pronouncements.

He assured that he remains a man of his word and will fulfill his promises  to the traditional rulers before leaving office, next year.

He reaffirmed his respect for the traditional institution as custodians of culture and the closest link to the people, thanking them for their prayers and support.

The governor urged the royal fathers to ensure that the combined quarterly meeting  featured fruitful deliberations that will strengthen peace and development in the State.

Earlier, the Chairman of the Rivers State Council of Traditional Rulers and Paramount Ruler of Apara Kingdom, His Royal Majesty, Eze Chike Amadi Worlu Wodo,  expressed  profound gratitude to the State Government for its efforts in  maintaining a cordial relationship with the traditional institution.

Wodo highlighted the importance of traditional rulers in conflict resolution, noting that their closeness to the people places them in a strategic position to mediate in  disputes involving chieftaincy matters, family disputes and land ownership in their respective communities.

The royal father drew the attention of the State Government to some  challenges affecting the performance of the traditional institution, particularly the lack of official utility vehicles and logistical support needed to discharge its responsibilities effectively.

He also appealed for improved monthly stipends and better welfare provisions to reflect prevailing economic realities.
