Eze Egi Derides Local Contractors, As Total Delivers Projects
Oil and Gas multinational giant ,TOTAL E&P Nigeria Limited has handed over three completed rural development projects to three communities in Egi Kingdom, Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area of Rivers State last weekend with the traditional ruler of the area, Eze Uzondu Anaele Wokoma asking the company to up its corporate social responsibility in the area.
The projects included luck-up shops in Akabuka Market, shopping mall, Umuagba Community Hall and the renovation of Erema Health Centre.
Expressing delight at the inauguration ceremony in Erema, Eze Wokoma commended Total and the people for turning a new leaf.
He said that the company had done well in delivering on its corporate social responsibility in the area but charged it to do more.
The monarch however, descended on the communities, saying,’ Total is willing to develop Egi but Egi is not ready to develop’’, as he blamed some elements in the communities for swapping projects for money while he castigated the local contractors who do not do their jobs to specifications after collecting fund for such projects.
The monarch, who said that some projects that could normally take one year to complete, take up to 20 years to complete because contractors collect money and abandon the projects, thereby forcing the oil company to reaward them after years of hesitation.
He singled out three local contractors at the venue of inauguration for praise for completing their jobs with record time and according to specifications. They included Mr. Nduka Ekpete, Dr. Ifeanyi Obulor and Dr. Cheta Williams. He also advised the people to do away with traitorousness and witchcrafts.
Speaking at the occasion, the Managing Director of Total, Mr. Francois Le Cocoq, noted that the completion and handing over of the projects was in line with the compnay’s commitment to its support in re-engineering and stimulating local commercial activities in the Egi communities as a platform for sustainable socio-economic development.
