NCC Explains Telecom Corporate Governance Code
The Executive Vice President of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Prof. Umar Danbatta has said that the activation of the enforcement of the telecom industry code for corporate governance was agreed by stakeholders in the industry.
The Tide source reports that the NCC Chief made the revelation during a stakeholders sensitisation workshop held in Lagos, recently.
The Tide further learnt that the eight-point code has a link with operational efficiency and regulatory excellence.
Danbatta also pointed out that the aim was to raise the standards of leadership and management in the sector in order to sustain its role as driver of economic enhancement.
He said that the code has been in existence close to four years, adding that it was presented to stakeholders in 2016.
According to him, it was also a proof that the commission has activated the processes for monitoring compliance by sectoral players.
The Tide further gathered that the code would make it difficult for anyone to serve as a director in telecommunication company for more than 15 years.
Another benefit of the code, as it was learnt, is that the position of Chairman and Chief Executive Officer shall not be occupied by an individual concurrently in any telecom company in the country.
Some industry watchers who spoke with The Tide source said that the code would enocourage a reasonable system of governance in the telecom industry.
They also kicked against foreigners domination of choice positions in the telecom firms in Nigeria.
