Open Letter To President Goodluck Jonathan
Mr. President,
I humbly make my contribution towards
national development in Nigeria to create awareness that should lead to human capital development by extension and not to condemn someone’s action. This is because I believe everyone has the capacity to make mistake. That is why the word correction exists.
Nigeria is a country with growing population. It is envisaged that development will keep increasing and this will lead drastic reduction in the availability of agricultural farmland.
The constant growth of the country’s population suggests that even the villages in Nigeria are not safe from encountering future urbanisation with its problems. Hence, the need for government of the day to enact a law instructing various villages in Nigeria to submit a master survey plan of their village land in entirety.
This single act has the capacity to reduce future demolition of properties because people would build in concurrence with planning standards, thereby leading to reduction in flooding that cause destruction of properties; reduce unavailability of open spaces for such social amenities as social gardens, open fields, car parking lot and social activities as child naming traditional wedding burial and so on. Implementation of this idea could be propitious to various persons such as Town Planners, Surveyors and so on.
Mr. President, let me remind you that Nigerians have lived in fear this past year from the incident of Chibok girls abduction, to the period of the much orchestrated Ebola Virus. Now, 2015 election is forth coming, the ordinary Nigeria citizens need to be reassured that their safety is guaranteed.
Though, we were told that security is everybody’s business, but there is need for reassurance of safety of Nigerians as their votes have high pedestal of essentiality.
There is no gainsaying the fact that many youths in Nigeria have embrace road skating. Therefore, there is the need for this activity to be encompassed among other sports in Nigeria because this is one recreational activity after footballing that has the capacity to bring youths together, create employment for youths in the future yield revenue for government and compel our youths to quit the streets for their better.
Mr. President, there is also the need to set up an independent science competition where both school leavers, secondary and university students would bring their scientific innovations to limelight and the winners sent overseas to further their study in reputable foreign universities.
The constructive effect of this science competition in Nigeria would far-reaching when established and would buttress the fact academic pursuit pays for Nigeria youths.
Take for instance, Angela Zhang a female teenager overseas was rewarded with $100,000 scholarship to study at Massachusetts’ for her research that led to impending cure for cancer. And Nigeria needs a world class practical base science research university that would be known for innovative research.
However, Malala Yousafzai – a female teenager who fought for teen Education in Pakistan was rewarded with Nobel Peace Prize irrespective of her age, sex, colour and background – an indication that the strength of a country lies in the innovative and creative ability of her youth irrespective of background, race and colour.
Mr. President, someone had asserted that the world is waiting to see Africa, and Nigeria cannot lag behind.
Enyi writes from Port Harcourt.
ThankGod Enyi
