Ex-NWKF President Challenges Federation On Competition
A former President of the
Nigeria Wushu Kung-Fu Federation (NWKF), Ojo Adelusi, has called on the board of the federation to ensure regular competitions to engage athletes.
Adelusi told newsmen in Lagos that performances of consistent athletes could be evaluated through such competitions.
He advised that during such competitions, organisers should find out how athletes were observing current rules of the sport and how effectively the rules were applied.
“The board is doing well but there should be more competitions that will spread across, because I believe that is what athletes really need after participating in series of trainings.
“It might not be essential to know the number of medals won by individual athletes, but there is the need to provide opportunities for technical officials to know how familiar they are with latest fighting rules.
“The rules of the sport are dynamic, and it is expected that seasoned technical officials must be updated with developments, which competitors should apply during championships,” he said.
According to him, such competitions will also help to bring stakeholders together whereby they would be able to work as a family for the development of wushu Kung-Fu in Nigeria.
The former president said that such competitions could be held quarterly, adding that they would help to keep athletes well prepared.
“Wushu Kung-fu is practised in so many states in Nigeria, and it will do us good to intermittently bring practitioners together.
“Even when they are to go for international competitions, they will not start from the scratch because they are consistent in the race at home,” he said.
Adelusi, also an Executive Member, African Wushu Federation, stressed the importance of periodic refresher seminars for technical officials to keep them abreast of developments for rapid development of the sport.
