Nigeria Leads Among Global Telecom Tower Hosts
Nigeria has been
penciled out as the first African country with the greatest chance to net the global range of telecommunications ownership by independent firms.
The co-founder of infrastructure company, Eaton Towers, Mr Terry Rhodes, said this over the week.
He said the country could attain such fear, if it could hit up to 75 per cent ownership of telecommunications towers within the African region.
Rhodes, explained that Nigeria, which is currently selling off the tower infrastructures to private companies, was reducing its capital expenditure and at the same time, opening up leasing opportunities.
According to him, the country is already at the front burner, adding that MTN has sold about 9.151 of its base stations.
The Tide gathered that HIS Holding was the major buyer of the base stations, even as Etisalat Nigeria has sold up to 2.136 of its towers to the same company (IHS Holding).
The IT expert who put Africa at 25 per cent independent tower ownership, said the trend had reached more than 75 per cent in other continents and that if the announced deals are completed, Nigeria would rank among the leading countries in terms of tower deal in the world.
In the same vein, he said the avalanche of smart phones, rapidly increased the demand for data services, which he said are growing between 50 -100 per cent, with a decline in revenue growth.
Furthermore, he said the pressures also made the operators to cut costs and outsourcing, adding that it was an alternative solution.
